Tragedy Strikes Northside Hospital Medical in Midtown Atlanta: Shooting Leaves One Dead and Four Injured

On May 3, 2023, a shooting occurred in a waiting room on the 11th floor of Northside Hospital Medical in Midtown Atlanta.[0] The suspected shooter, identified as Deion Patterson, 24, was accompanied by his mother and was at the facility for an appointment seeking new treatment after being dissatisfied with the care he was receiving from the Department of Veterans Affairs, according to the suspect's mother, a high-level source with the Atlanta Police Department told CNN.[1] At some point, Patterson became agitated and used a handgun to open fire, killing one woman and injuring four others, all of whom were women.

Three of the injured victims were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and were in critical condition, while another patient was stable, the hospital said.[2] As per a hospital representative, a patient was admitted with a gunshot wound in the abdomen while another patient had a wound in the arm.[1] According to the hospital, the face of the third patient in critical condition was shot.[1]

The woman who was killed was identified as Amy St. Pierre, 39, an employee with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the health agency said.[3] “CDC is deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of a colleague killed today in the Midtown Atlanta shooting.[4] Our hearts are with her family, friends, and colleagues as they remember her and grieve this tragic loss,” CDC spokesperson Benjamin Haynes wrote in an email.[5]

Patterson, a former Coast Guardsman, was apprehended in Cobb County in a condominium complex near Truist Park around 7:45 p.m.[3] ET, about 11 miles north of the shooting scene, local residents told CNN.[1] In January 2023, he was released from active duty.[6]

After the shooting, Patterson fled the scene and carjacked a vehicle nearby, prompting the police to issue a “be on the lookout” for the suspect, stating that he should be considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.[2] Later in the day, an undercover officer encountered Patterson and, with backup, took him into custody without incident.[6]

Northside Medical Midtown announced that offices would be closed on May 4, and all patient appointments were canceled.[7]

The Atlanta Police Department held a press conference just before 4 p.m. and provided updated information on the deadly Midtown shooting.[8] The police later recovered the vehicle during the manhunt, the chief noted.[9]

The incident shocked Atlanta and left the community in mourning. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
